Linear Responsibility Chart (LRC), describes the participation by various roles in completing activities / tasks or deliverables for a project or business process. It is especially useful in clarifying roles and responsibilities in cross-functional/departmental projects and processes.The LRC attempts to clarify the authority and working relationships in the project team  or business process. A chart that is in the form of a matrix with activities /tasks listed in rows and departments/persons in the columns.

LRC SYMBOLS

Responsibility: Person who owns the activity, is answerable for quality of the activity and has the duty to ensure the activity is performed.

Authority:  Person who has the power to establish, modify the course of action for the activity and has the duty of approving the activity. But can delegate the authority.

Must be Consulted: Person that must be consulted for information and/or subject matter expertise on the activity.

May be Consulted: Person that may be consulted for information and/or subject matter expertise on the activity.

Must be Notified: Person that must be notified about the activity

Benefits of the LRC to SMS include:
1. Portrays formal authority, responsibility and accountability among departments and person for SMS
2. Help all employees to understand how they relate and to know what is expected for teamwork
3. Acquaints new new employees with how things are being done
4. Brings out any potential conflict among departments/persons before the trouble starts
5. Permits all employees to see the "big picture" of how each departments/persons fit into the overall SMS activities.
6. Provides a standard for monitoring progress of SMS activities in airline.
7. It is a practical way to show interfaces among departments/person within the airline.
